The World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) established the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol initiative in 1997. Its goal was to develop standardized guidelines for greenhouse gas accounting. The GHG Protocol is now regarded as the most important and widely used standard for emissions reporting.

The initiators of climate protection projects—mostly renewable energy projects—receive emission credits for their efforts, which can be traded as climate protection certificates. The amount of emission offset is measured, for example, by comparing it with the emissions that would have been produced if a coal-fired power plant had been built instead of generating renewable energy.

The climate protection projects we purchase are each accredited, approved, and monitored according to one of three internationally recognized certification standards: VCS (Verified Carbon Standard), UN CER (Certified Emission Reduction by the United Nations), or the Gold Standard developed by WWF. The validation of project results regarding CO₂ savings achieved is certified by independent bodies, such as TÜV.

The purchased CO₂ certificates are retired. This is significant because retirement is a requirement for marketing and achieving carbon neutrality for companies and/or products. Without retirement, a CO₂ certificate in the voluntary market could be traded again, meaning it would not contribute to an additional emissions reduction.

Climate change is global, meaning it doesn’t matter where CO₂ emissions are produced or saved — the total greenhouse gas amount is what matters. In Germany, reducing or offsetting CO₂ is very costly, while in emerging and developing countries, it is more affordable. The Kyoto Protocol, which is legally binding under international law, therefore stipulates that climate protection projects that avoid or capture greenhouse gas emissions should take place where they are most economical. As a result, many projects are located in emerging and developing countries, where new technologies have high potential for savings and can be implemented at lower costs. Additionally, conditions for renewable energy installations (such as solar, wind, water, and biomass) are often much more favorable in these regions. These projects also contribute to improving the economic, social, and environmental situation, supporting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For emerging and developing countries, emissions trading is a key driver for the transfer of clean technologies and sustainable economic development.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a European directive on corporate sustainability reporting. It builds upon the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) and aims to elevate sustainability reporting to the same level as financial reporting. This will enhance accountability on sustainability issues and promote a sustainable European economy. This objective brings new, extensive requirements for companies.

• Starting in fiscal year 2024, the obligation applies to publicly traded companies already subject to NFRD (reporting year 2024 means publication in 2025).
• From fiscal year 2025, the obligation applies to all other large publicly traded companies (reporting year 2025 means publication in 2026).
• From fiscal year 2026, it applies to publicly traded SMEs, although they may defer until 2028.

From 2026, companies are affected if they meet two of the following three criteria:

• Balance sheet total > 25 million euros
• Net revenue > 50 million euros
• Number of employees > 250

The European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) will be the mandatory European sustainability reporting standards for companies subject to CSRD. The ESRS are being developed by the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) and align with internationally recognized standards like GRI. ESRS includes both cross-cutting and topic-specific reporting requirements, covering areas such as climate change, pollution, water and marine resources, biodiversity and ecosystems, and resource use and circular economy. ESRS ensures investors and stakeholders receive essential, comparable information. The core of ESRS is the "double materiality" assessment, which considers both the impact of and financial effects on sustainability issues.

The EU Taxonomy is a classification system defining sustainable economic activities. It is part of the “Sustainable Finance” action plan and aims to direct investments toward environmentally sustainable activities. Along with the European sustainability standards (ESRS), companies must report on the green financial metrics of the EU Taxonomy, such as the share of revenue, capital expenditures, and operating expenses flowing into the EU Taxonomy’s defined sustainable activities.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has established an internationally recognized standard that many companies use as a framework for reporting. Founded in 1997 by Ceres (formerly the Coalition of Environmentally Responsible Economies, now known as Investors and Environmentalists for Sustainable Prosperity) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, GRI develops standards in collaboration with a range of stakeholders, including businesses, environmental, social, and human rights groups, and government organizations. These standards facilitate transparent, standardized, and comparable reporting on a global scale. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) went into effect on January 1, 2016, as an extension of the Millennium Goals. The aim was to create a set of transparent goals applicable to every country in the world. Key SDGs include responsible resource management and promoting equality, especially between the Global North and South. The SDGs also incorporate innovation and partnerships as core strategies. In total, 17 goals and 169 sub-goals were established, each with indicators for tracking progress. The SDGs are widely used in practice and help companies in strategic planning and goal setting.
